We've developed a testing procedure to ensure all material meets specific railroad requirements. Every batch is tested for insertion and retraction force on a Grade 5 creosote treated tie, as a part of our quality control procedure.

Testing Procedure

1. Begin testing

Encore's push and pull machine measures Insertion and Retraction PSI which is then converted to pounds of force.

2. Pushing

Encore used Norfolk Southern testing specifications to push a 1 inch by 3/4 inch hole.

3. Plugging

Encore's two part plugging compound is the dispensed into the spike hole.

4. Pushing

Following TTCI test standards, a spike is then pushed into the chemical one hour after the dispensing using a Nordco anvil. The insertion force is then recorded.

5. Pulling

As per TTCI standards, the spike is then retracted an hour later and the amount of force is recorded.

 

All of our compounds are tested for peak insertion force.

The PSI recorded from pulling the spike is then transferred to pounds of force.

All of our chemical is tested for peak insertion force.

Independent Class 1 Railroad Compound Testing

In an independent study by a Class 1 railroad, our 1:1 Ratio Expanding Tie Plugging Compound displayed exceptional performance in push and pull insertions, puash and pull extractions and gage resistance testing.

Testing Procedure

Crossties were filled with Encore’s 1:1 Ratio Expanding Tie Plugging Compound in holes that were dry and holes that contained 20ml of water. The spikes were inserted in the ties for both the wet and dry holes and the force needed to insert the spikes recorded in foot pounds of force.

The spikes were then extracted from the wet and dry holes and the force needed to extract the spikes was recorded in foot pounds of force. The deflection test was done with a tie plate and rail on the tie and the spikes inserted to hold the plate and rail to the tie. A lateral force was applied to the rail and the lateral deflection was recorded. A wood tie plug was inserted in an additional tie as a control and comparison of the Encore material.

Results

Our compound was tested for 8.5 million cycles, which was calculated to be 6.25 years of service in the tie, with minimal deflection. The wood tie plug, which showed substantially more deflection, and failed at 2.25 million cycles or 2.5 years of service in the tie.
